“Last Strange Day” in Saint-Leu-d’Esserent

Yesterday I reached out to artist Alain Granger—whose painting Last Strange Day I featured recently—to learn more about the story behind it. He kindly responded and sent along some additional photos of his painting as well as recent pictures of Hôtel de l’Oise and the window of the house where the picture of Jim was taken that inspired his painting.

Acrylic on canvas by Alain Granger

I painted this acrylic on canvas in July 2011 in homage to Jim, 40 years gone already… I live in Précy-sur-Oise. The city where the photo was taken—Saint-Leu-d’Esserent—is only 5 km from my house. I went to see the house (window) while jogging. The house is still there. It has been modified, only the cast iron balustrade remains. Here are two photos from the site, it’s the house next to the restaurant. —Alain Granger
